Reading skills are foundational to learning in every subject. Across Houston ISD, students are strengthening those skills, with reading performance improving in every tested grade since 2023. Supporting that growth means recognizing that students come to the classroom with different needs—including students who are learning to read, write, speak, and understand English while also learning grade-level content.

At Revere Middle School, 64% of students are English learners with 35 languages represented on campus. Teachers use targeted phonics instruction, pre-teaching, and other literacy supports to help students build English proficiency and the reading skills they need to fully participate in classroom instruction. These supports give students greater access to grade-level lessons without lowering expectations for what they can learn.
