Houston ISD has more than doubled the number of campuses offering Dual Language programming in the last three years, expanding from 47 campuses to 105. New programs typically begin in preK or Kindergarten and expand one grade level at a time, giving more HISD students the opportunity to develop proficiency in two languages while building strong academic skills.

At Scarborough Elementary, that learning happens side by side. Spanish- and English-speaking students are paired together from preK through fifth grade, learning each other’s languages and helping one another become bilingual with support from specialized teachers. The model has been part of the Scarborough community for 11 years.
