Inside the Classrooms & Culture of Hamilton Middle School

Inside the Classrooms & Culture of Hamilton Middle School

In the heart of Houston’s historic Heights neighborhood, Hamilton Middle School is proving that academic success is built on a foundation of instruction and opportunities. From award-winning teachers to a host of after-school activities, the Huskies are thriving with a clear mission in mind: maintaining their status as an "A" rated campus.

A Culture of Achievement

Under the leadership of Principal Dr. Dejonnette Childress, the campus recently saw its accountability rating jump from a B to an A. "We cannot wait to maintain that A," said Dr. Childress. "The best way to do that is to provide high-quality instruction all the time."

Empowering Educators, Inspiring Students

In her third year at Hamilton Middle School, Science teacher Irma Bustos, who was honored as Teacher of the Year, credits her success to the continuous support of the campus administration and a relentless focus on student achievement. "Being Teacher of the Year meant that all of the hours I put into my craft meant something," said Bustos. "That my students were showing growth, meeting goals, and hitting achievement standards."

Math teacher Daniel Breslau has spent over a decade refining his approach. He believes that middle school math should be accessible, not intimidating. "You know what sounds scary is actually easy—that’s the approach you need," said Breslau. After 12 years at Hamilton, his philosophy remains simple: always improve.

GT and Dual Language Programs

GT and Dual Language Programs

As a Gifted and Talented (GT) Magnet and Dual Language campus, Hamilton Middle School attracts 6th through 8th graders from across the district through a dual-transfer system. While the campus is already a hub for advanced academics, Dr. Childress says one goal is to increase the school’s GT enrollment.

"You do more projects and open-ended questions," said  7th-grader Xavier Janicki. "It’s basically just a little more advanced than regular classes."

Xavier is currently enrolled in the Native Spanish Speakers 2 course, he is mastering Spanish grammar and public speaking. He hopes to eventually participate in a study abroad program to immerse himself in a Spanish-speaking country.

Beyond the Classroom: Clubs and Spirit

The learning doesn't stop when the final bell rings. Hamilton offers a large selection of after-school activities where students can explore their interests. Whether it's the Cooking Club, Chess Club, or Board Game Club, there is always an activity keeping students engaged.

When it comes to Hamilton’s spirit teams, Assistant Principal and Cheer Coach Mia Agnew views these extracurriculars as essential "life labs."

"It builds confidence, leadership, and independence," Agnew said. "Once it’s time for the show, it’s on them."

The program also enforces the "no pass, no play" rule, ensuring that students like 8th-grade cheer co-captain Nayeli Ramirez manages her time handling school work first, and activities are the reward.
