Houston ISD is expanding its Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings for students at ten high schools through the Barbara Jordan Career Center, the district's centralized hub for industry-aligned career training. Starting next school year, Furr, Heights, Sam Houston MSTC, Kashmere, North Forest, Northside, Waltrip, Booker T. Washington, Mickey Leland, and Wheatley High School students will now have access to 16 programs of study beyond what is available at these schools.

HISD is exploring Level 5 Autonomy for its highest-performing high schools under Texas Senate Bill 1882. To qualify, campuses must have earned an "A" rating for four consecutive years and maintain an achievement gap of less than 25% between student groups.

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is proud to announce it has earned a Superior Achievement “A” rating (score of 96) under the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) for the 2024–2025 ratings cycle, based on data from the 2023–2024 school year.

HISD is expanding opportunities for students to earn college credits, industry certifications, and associate degrees while still in high school, strengthening college and career readiness while reducing the cost and time required to access high-wage careers.

Local businesses, churches, and nonprofits are rallying to support Houston’s students and teachers. Through "The Houston Promise" initiative, the District aims to elevate every HISD school to an A or B rating by August 2027.
